9 Crystals for Sleep: Feel Refreshed With These Healing Gems

By Mary Ancillette |

A guide to crystals for sleep

Everyone needs a good night’s sleep. If you wake early, have trouble nodding off, or your sleep quality isn’t good enough, these crystals can help.

Whether you have trouble switching off in the evening, or find yourself waking in the middle of the night, a lack of sleep can have serious consequences for your health and happiness.

Spending more time in bed isn’t always the answer though. Sleep quality is just as important if you want to feel refreshed and full of energy.

This is because sleep is divided into two alternating stages: non-rapid eye movement and rapid eye movement (known as the dream sleep). If our natural rhythms get disrupted, we can wake feeling tired, irritable and have trouble concentrating – even if we’ve spent the recommended eight hours in bed.

One way to improve your sleep quality is by placing specific healing crystals and stones near your bed. These crystals, with their unique vibrations and soothing energy, can resonate with the sleep cycle, induce relaxation and encourage a good night’s rest.

Which are the Best Crystals for Sleep?

Amethyst

1. Amethyst (Stone of Spirituality, Contentment & Meditation)

Colour: Purple to Lavender
Chakra: Crown and Third Eye
Origin: USA, Mexico, Canada, Russia, India, Sri Lanka, Britain, Brazil, Uruguay, Siberia, Africa

Amethyst is a high vibrational crystal that’s strongly connected to your subconscious mind. As one of the dream crystals and a natural protector, it can prevent nightmares for a more restful sleep.

Aside from more pleasant dreams, Amethyst is also known for its calming and soothing qualities. If you have trouble falling asleep due to stress or anxiety, it’s a useful stone to place near your pillow.

Amethyst isn’t just a crystal for sleep quality though. As it’s made from quartz, which has strong amplification properties, it’s an excellent choice for programming and a versatile crystal to add to your collection.

Note: Some people may find the Amethyst energy too stimulating to aid sleep. If this happens to you, one of the other crystals on this list may be a better choice.

Tip for Using Amethyst: If you’re a light sleeper, avoid placing a large piece of Amethyst near your head at night.

Lepidolite

2. Lepidolite (Stone of Transition)

Colour: Purple, Pink
Chakra: Third Eye, Throat, Crown and Heart
Origin: Czech Republic, Brazil, USA, Dominican Republic, Madagascar

One of the best crystals for sleep problems is Lepidolite. Named after the Greek word for “scales,” it’s said to bring balance and harmony to the user, which are vital qualities for a restful sleep.

Lepidolite contains lithium, which is used medically for depression and mood swings. Getting a good night’s sleep is almost impossible when you’re feeling anxious, scared, or angry, so it’s an important stone if you have difficulty falling asleep.

It’s also associated with the Third Eye chakra. This allows Lepidolite to affect sleep, rest and dreaming, making it a wonderful choice for restoring good sleep patterns.

Tip for Using Lepidolite: Hold Lepidolite in your hands during the evening to relax muscles and dissolve tension before placing it under the pillow. You can also cleanse with an Amethyst cluster (read my full guide).

Angelite

3. Angelite (Stone of Awareness)

Colour: Blue and White
Chakra: Throat
Origin: Mexico, Peru, Germany, Britain, Poland, Egypt, Libya

Angelite’s soothing blue energy brings a sense of calm and inner peace to the user. As a stone that imbues serenity and love, it facilitates angelic connection, guidance and astral travelling.

The great thing about this stone is that it can ease worries and anxieties. These are common causes of restless nights, especially after a stressful day. It’s also said to be a “problem solver” whilst dreaming, so sleeping near Angelite could help you wake up with new ideas.

If you need to relax so that you can get to sleep, or wish to enhance angelic communication whilst dreaming, Angelite is a brilliant gemstone.

Note: Do not use Angelite near water as it’s a soft crystal that can turn into gypsum if it gets wet.

Tip for Using Angelite: Meditate with Angelite to gain clarity about a problem, or place a piece at the four corners of your bed to promote a healthy sleeping pattern.

Black Tourmaline

4. Black Tourmaline (Stone for Grounding & Protection)

Colour: Black
Chakra: Root
Origin: Pakistan, Afghanistan, Brazil, Africa, USA, Madagascar

If you often have negative thoughts when trying to fall asleep, you’ll know how disruptive this can be to your sleep quality.

Black Tourmaline is a great crystal for neutralising these negative thoughts, as it provides a strong connection between earth and soul. Aside from making it easier to drop off, it can help you feel more rejuvenated in the morning, as your subconscious won’t be ruminating on negative feelings throughout the night.

This crystal also has an energetic frequency that promotes a feeling of calm and deep relaxation in the body. If you often feel stressed before bed, it’s a great choice.

Tip for Using Black Tourmaline: Place Black Tourmaline in your bedroom or under your pillow to benefit from its healing power throughout the night.

Selenite

5. Selenite

Colour: Pure White, Translucent
Chakra: Crown
Origin: England, Russia, Greece, Austria, Mexico, France, Germany, USA, Poland

If you have monkey-mind chatter that stops you getting to sleep, Selenite could help calm your mind. It vibrates at a high frequency and brings a deep sense of calm and peace, while dispelling negative energy.

Selenite gets its name from the Greek goddess of the moon Selene. Aside from its calming effect, the crystal is said to have many mystical healing properties. It also has a wonderfully ethereal appearance and is an excellent stone to use in meditation.

Note: Do not allow Selenite to get wet as it may dissolve.

Tip for Using Selenite: A large piece of Selenite in your bedroom or next to your bed will help to create a peaceful atmosphere.

Hematite

6. Hematite (Stone for the Mind)

Colour: Silver, Black, Red with Metallic Lustre
Chakra: Root
Origin: Brazil, Italy, Canada, Britain, Sweden, Switzerland

Hematite is a beautiful grounding crystal to use when you have problems you can’t seem to solve. It’s great for quietening mental chatter that can interrupt your sleeping pattern.

As well as a stone for the mind, Hematite also provides a calming atmosphere, heals emotional pain, and balances the body, mind and spirit. It was even used by Ancient Egyptians to suppress hysteria and anxiety, which can cause sleep disturbances.

If you wish to promote a deep, healing sleep while soothing your anxiety, Hematite is a good choice. On a related note, rose quartz, kyanite and citrine are also wonderful stones for anxiety.

Tip for Using Hematite: Just before you go to bed, hold Hematite in your hands, close your eyes and visualise having a good night’s sleep. Then place it under your pillow.

Smoky quartz untumbled

7. Smoky Quartz (Stone of Cooperation)

Colour: Light to Dark Smoky Grey/Brown
Chakra: Root
Origin: Worldwide

Smoky Quartz is a powerful grounding stone that’s brilliant for relieving stress – which is one of the most common causes of poor sleep quality. It can also help you stay in the moment, rather than worrying about what happened earlier in the day.

Additionally, Smoky Quartz can dissolve negative energies and emotional blockages that may keep you awake.

If you need a crystal to calm your mind and body, help let go of worries and promote a deep peaceful sleep, Smoky Quartz is the answer.

Tip for Using Smoky Quartz: You can wear Smoky Quartz as a pendant to relieve stress during the day.

Moonstone

8. Moonstone (Stone of New Beginnings)

Colour: White/Cream/Yellow Milky Sheen
Chakra: Crown
Origin: Sri Lanka, India, Australia

Moonstone has been used for centuries as a sleep stone. It’s thought to aid with lucid dreaming, but can also increase sleep quality.

As the name suggests, Moonstone is strongly connected to the moon and intuition. Its feminine energy works beautifully for calming and stabilising emotions, encouraging gentleness to oneself and promoting a night of restful sleep.

Being a stone of new beginnings, it can also help with the changing of life patterns; helping us to accept life’s up and down, like the moon waxing and waning, as natural rhythms of life.

Tip: A moonstone elixir is said to aid insomnia and prevent sleep walking.

Tip for Using Moonstone: Use Moonstone on a full moon for divining.

Howlite

9. Howlite

Colour: Green or White
Chakra: Heart
Origin: USA

Howlite has a beautiful calming energy that resonates with a good sleep pattern. It’s a great stone to use with masculine energy- especially if you struggle with bad moods or relationship problems.

This stone is said to teach patience and calm uncontrolled anger. A piece in your pocket will help absorb your own anger throughout the day, which can mean you feel more relaxed as the day comes to an end.

So, if your mind is over-working and you’re struggling to wind down in the evening, Howlite is an excellent stone.

Tip for Using Howlite: Place Howlite under your pillow if you struggle to relax at night. You can also use it in a grid around your bed to help with insomnia and bad dreams.

Other Tips for Using Crystals for Sleeping

Besides looking lovely in your bedroom, a crystal’s unique energy can help promote a restful sleep. Not all crystals are good for this, but the ones on this list can provide a deep sleep and help insomnia.

Here are some tips for getting the most out of your sleep stones:

  • Most sleep crystals can be placed under a pillow or beside your bed when you go to sleep. If you’re a light sleeper, you may need to place crystals further from your bed though.
  • Only use one of two crystals at the same time, as combining lots of energies may actually keep you awake!
  • Babies, toddlers and children can benefit from sleep stones too. Place one or more crystals on a bedside table near their cot or bed to help improve sleep.
  • Try using different crystals and monitoring their effects, as some may work better than others. You may also want to try crystal singing bowls for a different approach. Additionally, some people find that a crystal grid made from sleep stones can help.

Beside using these gemstones, there are plenty of other ways to help promote a deep sleep.

Many people find a tidy bedroom easier to sleep in. Decluttering can be a great way to feel more relaxed – and also makes it easier to show off your beautiful new crystals!

You may also find that a set bedtime routine can make it easier to fall asleep. This is because your body’s circadian rhythm thrives on consistency. Of course, avoiding an evening coffee can also help, as it can take up to 6-hours for caffeine to leave your system.

Which Angels are Associated With Sleep?

The angels I most associate with sleep are:

  • Archangel Raphael – The Master Healer
  • Archangel Michael – to help break the worry cycle.
  • Archangel Jophiel – “The Beauty of God.”
  • Archangel Raguel – to smooth troubled relationships.
  • Archangel Ariel – for facing uncertainty.

I love invoking these angels when I use crystals to help me sleep. They help ease my worries, induce relaxation and protect me throughout the night.

Summary

If you have trouble getting to sleep or wake early, you may not be getting enough high-quality rest. This can make you feel tired, demotivated and unhappy.

One way to improve sleep quality is to use the nine crystals in this article. Each has unique characteristics that promote relaxation, calm your mind and provide a deep and refreshing sleep.

My favourite crystal for sleep is Lepidolite. It has a wonderful calming effect, along with its attributes of harmony and balance.
