Are you confused about how to use healing crystals together? Or are you worried that the “wrong” combination could be less effective – or even harmful? This article will explain how to use healing crystals and stones together.
I’m often asked if healing crystals can be used together. The most common concern is that their energies could interfere with each other, reducing the benefits.
The simple answer is that all crystals can be combined – and it’s often beneficial to do so. Each crystal has a unique vibration, so combining them increases the healing effect on our energy field.
With that said, there are some considerations when combining crystals. The key is to experiment, use your intuition, and see what works best for you.
In this article, I’ll talk about why it’s safe to combine crystals and stones. I’ll also discuss the different ways you can use crystals together and how to choose effective combinations.
Why Healing Crystals Can (Usually) Be Used Together
There’s a lot of confusion about using crystals together, but the good news is that combinations always provide a positive effect. To explain why, we need to understand a bit about the fundamentals of crystal healing.
Each crystal has a unique vibration, which defines its energetic blueprint. The frequency of vibration depends on the mineral content and growing environment, with some crystals having a higher frequency than others.
Fortunately, there’s no such thing as a negative frequency. All crystal energies are positive. Higher frequencies also aren’t “better” than lower frequencies – they just have different effects.
This means that whenever you combine crystals, you are accessing a wider range of energies. The result is always positive.
Some Examples of Crystals That Work Well Together
While all crystals can be used together, some combinations are particularly effective for specific intentions. I’ve listed a few of my favourite examples below.
Keep in mind that you don’t need to use all of these crystals at the same time. As always, use your intuition to guide you.
- Love, Self-Love, Unconditional Love – I like to use rose quartz, mangano calcite, pink tourmaline and rhodonite for all aspects of love. You can also include red jasper, moonstone, amethyst or green aventurine for a different energy of love.
- Meditation – It’s wonderful to use crystals like celestite, danburite, apophyllite, clear quartz and moldavite for focus or inner peace when meditating. Also, azurite, angelite, herkimer diamond, selenite and amethyst may benefit your practice. As this is a powerful group of crystals, use black tourmaline to ensure you remain grounded, and try not to combine more than three at once.
- Creativity – As creativity is primarily associated with your Sacral Chakra, crystals such as carnelian, citrine, fire agate, tiger’s eye and orange calcite make wonderful combinations. You could also add lapis lazuli which has a strong manifestation energy and enhances creativity.
- Career – Goldstone, sunstone, citrine, green aventurine or carnelian are great options for career-focused intentions.
- Sleep – Amethyst, blue lace agate, rose quartz and lepidolite are wonderful for helping improve sleep quality. Make sure you monitor your sleep, however, as too many energies could actually keep you awake!
- Grounding – I love my grounding crystals, as they bring balance and keep me in the present moment. Hematite, smokey quartz, black obsidian, black tourmaline, red jasper or bloodstone are wonderful to work with.

Can Using the Wrong Crystals Together be Harmful?
As we’ve established, there are no “bad” crystals, as they all emit a positive energy. Whether you choose to work with one or many, there aren’t any combinations that cause long-lasting harm.
With that said, combining too many crystals may start to feel overwhelming. If this is the case, you just need to reduce the quantity you’re using.
There are also rare occasions when a person may experience a temporary unpleasant effect when working with a crystal’s energy or group of energies.
Feelings of dizziness, agitation or nausea have been reported. This doesn’t cause harm, and goes away as soon as you remove the stone from your collection, but it’s something to watch out for when using healing crystals.
What Causes This Unpleasant Effect?
This effect isn’t fully understood, but there are several theories as to why it happens.
- The person may not be grounded enough.
- The person may be highly sensitive to the energies of certain crystal combinations.
- The person’s intuition may be indicating that the energetic blueprint isn’t right for them.
My opinion is that all three theories are at least partially correct, depending on the person and situation. This means you might need to use trial and error to find the solution.
What Should You Do If a Crystal Causes an Unpleasant Sensation?
You should start by testing whether grounding reduces the unpleasant feelings. Here’s a simple method:
Step onto the earth or grass (preferably with bare feet) and imagine roots growing out of the soles of your feet into the ground. Then, when deep enough, imagine securing them around a rock or anything of your choice.
If that doesn’t help, you could try adding another crystal to balance the energies, or using the combination for short periods to build up tolerance. Sometimes simply holding the crystal on the other side of the body can help.
In some cases, none of these techniques will reduce the unpleasant feelings. This likely means that the crystal combination isn’t right for you, so it’s best to try a different option.
Tip: A crystal may also bring up a negative emotion or bad memory that needs clearing. This often feels like a negative effect, but the crystal vibration is actually helping rid you of emotional wounding.
The Importance of Cleansing Crystals
It’s possible for a crystal to absorb negative energies and emit them back to you. This is particularly likely if you’re clearing deep and painful emotional problems, or suffer from depression.
For this reason, you should regularly cleanse your crystals. Once cleansed, try using the crystal again to see if it still causes a negative effect.
Is There a Limit to How Many Crystals Can be Used Together?
There’s no set limit to how many crystals you can use together. There are times, however, when using too many could feel overwhelming.
This means that the “right” quantity is largely a matter of personal preference and practicality, although there are also methods you can use to select crystal combinations.
Methods for Deciding How Many Crystals to Use
One way to select a crystal combination is with crystal grids. These combine crystal energies using sacred geometry, which can amplify the positive effects.
Once you’ve decided on the layout, choose the combination of crystals that feel right to you. The interaction between the crystal vibrations and sacred geometry gives a profound experience.
You can also create Chakra collections, which usually have seven stones. These are used to cleanse, balance and energise the seven main Chakras throughout your body.
Of course, you can always use intuition to choose your own combinations. When using healing crystals for a specific intention, stones from the same family, or those with a similar colour or energy, work well together.
You can even ask the Angels to assist you with finding a selection that supports your intention. I like to invoke Archangel Raziel or Michael for this purpose.
Tip: Don’t be tempted to carry a crystal for every situation. It’s far better to focus on a particular intention or goal, then decide how many to use.
How to Know if You’re Using Too Many Different Crystals
If you’re a beginner, it might not be obvious when the energies of different crystals are starting to become overwhelming. Signs to watch for include feeling restless, unable to concentrate, or just a sense that something isn’t quite right.
When you notice these symptoms, “ask” your intuition whether there are too many crystals. This may seem obvious, but it’s easy to forget to ask. If the answer is “yes,” then try working with the crystal you’re most drawn to and put away the rest (including jewellery.)
Tip: Take your time to get used to new crystals, particularly if they have a strong energy or a high vibration.
Are There Any Stones That Shouldn’t be Used Together?
There aren’t any specific crystals that can’t be used together. It comes down to personal choice, your intended purpose, and your intuition.
Some crystal combinations seem to work better than others though. Combinations that include the same element, colour, or property always make good companions.
Going Beyond the Basics
Once you’ve gained some experience with crystal healing, you can start to become more creative. This is where crystal combinations get really interesting!
The key is to look at all the benefits of a crystal. Over time, this allows you to uncover how different stones might complement and support each other.
Let me give you an example. If you’re feeling anxious, you typically don’t want to use a mood-enhancing crystal that could make this worse. Instead, a calming crystal, such as lepidolite, would be an excellent choice.
But what if you want to combine crystals to reduce your anxiety further? Of course, you could add a similar crystal, but this isn’t the only option.
Alternatively, you could use a crystal such as ruby. This is an intense and energising crystal that stimulates the Chi, so it’s not immediately obvious why this would help with anxiety.
However, ruby can clear emotional blockages and ground you. This, in turn, can balance your emotions, motivate you, and fill you with courage. These attributes will help you to take small steps towards overcoming whatever is making you anxious.
The point isn’t that ruby and lepidolite always work together, but that you don’t need to be scared of trying new and interesting combinations. I have yet to come across a combination of crystals that don’t work together. Yes, combining different energies may give a different effect, but the result will still be positive.
I’m a firm believer of intuition and how it guides you. If you want to use a combination of crystals because it feels right to you, then do it. Mood, intention, and what you hope to achieve have the greatest impact when deciding which healing crystals to work with.
All crystals have a positive and unique vibration. This means any combination can create a profound experience, and they don’t cancel each other out or cause a negative effect.
There are hundreds of stones and energies to choose from. Whether you use one, two, or many crystals, there are no ‘wrong’ combinations – as long as you listen to your intuition.
